CLASSIFICATION

 

Tahitian cultured pearl is a cultured pearl naturally coloured produce by grafting and famring of the pearl oyster pinctada margaritifera  in a natural environment, in french polynesia.

Cultured pearl's classification depends on general standards and additionnal standards.

General standards:

Pearl's size :

between 7 and 18 mm

 

pearl's shape :

round, half-round, circle, baroque, button, pear, oval...

 

pearl's color :

green, blue-tond, red-toned, grey, black...

 

pearl's Skin quality :

it depends of the amount of smooth skin, without imperfection.

 

pearl's shine :

from excellent to weak

 

With this standards we can set two classification table, the french polynesian one and the GIA one :

A or AAA: Tahitian pearl which have at most one imperfection or a group of superficial imperfection concentrate on 10% of the surface. Excellent shine

B or AA : Tahitian pearl which have at most one imperfection or a group of superficial imperfection concentrate on 30% of the surface. good shine

C or A :Tahitian pearl which have at most one imperfection or a group of superficial imperfection concentrate on 60% of the surface. good or average shine
